Machinery directive and safety standards
The machinery and safety directive is currently evolving. New standards have appeared, others have been superseded, but some of them extended until 2012.
This document drawn up by Metal Work and the attachments are intended to make interpretation of the rules as simple as possible.

The Machinery Directive, EC 2006/42, does not apply directly to Metal Work components, which are not considered "machines" or "quasi-machines", nor are they safety components. Both CETOP (European Fluid Power Committee) and the Machinery Working Group of the European Commission have made a clear statement in this sense.

The design and manufacture of Metal Work components must be such that the complete machine complies with the fundamental health and safety requirements. As a guarantee of this, Metal Work has drawn up declarations of Product Conformity in accordance with directive 2006/42.

A safety system designer who applies EN ISO 13849-1 must calculate the performance level (PL)To do this, he needs to know the b10d * value of the pneumatic components forming the safety systems to calculate the MTTFd (mean time to dangerous failure).
* The b10d is an index of reliability and is defined as the number of cycles until 10% of the components fail dangerously.
It must be declared by the manufacturer of the pneumatic component. It can be determined with reference to ISO19973.
EN 62061requires the SIL (Safety Integrity Level) to be calculated for safety systems. To do this for pneumatic components, the designer must refer to the PL defined in EN ISO 13849-1. This means that the b10 d is an index that is also required by anyone applying EN 62061.
